Juan Cervantes Morales (Hubbard) is a poet and a promoter of poetry in Spanish in the state of Oregon. As an author of two books of poetry, Cervantes is deeply engaged in both Oregon's poetry communities and Spanish speaking communities. He provides Spanish/English poetry programs.
Bio
Cervantes began writing what he calls songs when he was a child. His father, a storyteller, would often share tales by the fire at night while Certantes would sit quietly, captivated by his stories. He read and memorized poetry, particularly the works of Mexican poets, and then started writing free verse and sonnets.
Today, Cervantes shares his poetry through workshops, lectures, readings, and recitals. He is the founder of the presses "Imaging media" and "Espiral" and the author of two books of poetry: Voces de libertad (2010) and Palabra sin fin (2020). In 2018, he organized and presented, along with award-winning Oregonian poet Kim Stafford, poetry readings and themes at cultural centers and clubs in Oregon. As a member of the Silverton Poetry Association (2012-2018) he created bilingual Spanish/English poetry programs to promote Hispanic poetry. He has been a poetry guest columnist for newspapers and magazines in Oregon and California and served as a member of the board of directors of the Oregon Poetry Association (2024). He also co-directs with Dr. Isabel Jaén Portillo the project "Arte Poética," which, in collaboration with community artist Alejandro Barragán, gathers and promotes the work of Hispanic Portland and Oregon poets and holds monthly events at the Zone Gallery. He currently acts as a special guest reader and exponent of topics on poetry for students at Portland State University. He primarily writes poetry in Spanish, though occasionally writes in English as well.
