Tommy Nunn

Luthier/Bouzouki Making

Tommy Nunn (Summit) is a luthier, a stringed-instrument maker. He first learned the craft as an apprentice and now makes his own hand carved instruments, including violins, harps, guitars, and mandolins. He also teaches his craft.

Bio

Tommy Nunn is a luthier, a stringed-instrument maker. As a young man, Nunn apprenticed with a master violin maker, the late Willis Gault of Baltimore, Maryland. During his apprenticeship, Nunn learned to craft both violins and the nearly extinct viola d’Amore. He currently works with Dave Thormahlen in his shop, Thormahlen Harps in Corvallis, which produces a variety of hand-crafted stringed instruments. An active performing musician, Nunn has expanded his repertoire to include harps, guitars, mandolins, and bouzoukis, or octave mandolins. Each instrument is unique, reflecting the distinctive talents and techniques of the individual luthier. Nunn’s instruments are hand carved and reflect both traditional designs and his own innovations. In addition to his own work, Nunn continues to teach others the craft of lutherie.
