Bio
Prekshita Jain was born in the culturally rich city, Bangalore in Karnataka state in South India. Being from a traditional South Indian family, she was exposed to a lot of classical music and dance forms early on in her childhood. Jain has been learning and performing classical and folk dances for past twenty years with over 100 performances both in India and in the US. In Mysore, India, she studied dance under guidance of Sheela Sridhar, in the Kalakshetra style of Bharatha Natyam, and completed her Junior/Intermediate grade exam successfully. She continued to perform in multiple cultural events in India before moving to the US. Learning Bharatha Natyam over the past several years has not only helped her learn about and connect with her Indian culture, but has also helped Jain to be confident about herself and be proud of her heritage. As an artist, she highly prioritizes maintaining the technique of Bharatha Natyam. Jain values and enjoys Bharatha Natyam's emphasis the on beat cycles. Growing up in family that plays music, rhythm has been natural instinct for her-- however, the beat cycles in Bharatha Natyam are unique, complex, and require training to understand. Her study of classical Carnatic music has given her a strong foundation in the complex rhythmic structure which is also same rhythms followed in Bharatha Natyam dance. Jain is an apprentice in the 2023-2024 cycle of OFN's TAAP Award.
