Ang Diki Sherpa (Portland) is a Nepalese traditional cook and restaurateur. She makes traditional momos, a dumpling that many consider to be Nepal’s national food. Sherpa was born in Nepal and grew up cooking with her mother and grandmother.

Ang Diki Sherpa is a Nepalese traditional cook and restaurateur. She makes traditional momos, a type of dumpling many consider to be Nepal’s national food. Sherpa was born in Nepal and grew up cooking with her mother and grandmother. She moved to Portland in the 1990s, and now owns a food cart called Sherpa Nirvana Momo, located in northeast Portland. In the summer of 2016, she started serving the same traditional handmade momos that she once helped her grandmother make; her teenage daughter fills the momos as she once did. Sherpa also caters traditional Nepalese foods for special occasions. To make momos, Sherpa first mixes wheat flour and water to make a dough. She rolls out the dough on a large surface and cuts it into small circles about 3 1/2 inches in diameter. She fills each circle with one of three delicious fillings: beef, chicken, or a vegan option made of vegetables, lentils, and spices. In keeping with tradition, she brings the rounded edges together and then twists them around the center to form a lovely flower shape. Next Sherpa places the momos in a bamboo steamer and cooks them for about 10 minutes. She makes a chutney out of chilis, cilantro, garlic, and tomatoes to accompany the momos.
